Scroll’s zkEVM Protocol Goes Live on Ethereum Mainnet

Scroll, a layer-2 zkEVM protocol, has officially launched on the Ethereum mainnet after more than two years of development. The protocol introduces a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) platform, marking a significant milestone in the realm of layer-2 scaling solutions.

On October 17, Scroll made the momentous announcement of its mainnet launch. However, keen-eyed blockchain enthusiasts noted that the protocol had already been operating in stealth mode for approximately a week, as indicated by blockchain data. This stealthy phase allowed the protocol to undergo rigorous testing and ensure a smooth transition to the mainnet.

The protocol stands out by offering seamless compatibility with layer-2 Ethereum through contracts written for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) powered by zero-knowledge proofs. This innovative approach provides developers with the ability to deploy their existing Ethereum projects onto Scroll without the need for significant codebase modifications. The protocol’s emphasis on zkEVM ensures that the user experience on Scroll mirrors that of Ethereum, simplifying the migration process for developers.

Security and Community Focus Drive Scroll’s Success

Throughout its development journey, the protocol prioritized security and community engagement. The team conducted extensive testing, including three battle-tested testnets, and enlisted the expertise of four independent security firms to conduct thorough audits of the protocol. Haichen Shen, Co-founder, emphasized the team’s commitment to holistic security practices, including maintaining an internal security team and embracing open-source principles.

Meanwhile, the protocol actively fostered a vibrant developer community, encouraging creativity and experimentation. Over the past year, more than 100 projects, spanning infrastructure, decentralized finance (DeFi), and Web3 gaming, have deployed on its testnets. This collaborative approach has contributed to its appeal among developers seeking a robust and user-friendly layer-2 solution.

Promising Uptake: 2,030 ETH Deposited Within 24 Hours

Following the official launch announcement, the protocol experienced a surge in activity, with 2,030 ETH deposited within the first 24 hours, according to data from Dune Analytics. This influx of deposits highlights the enthusiasm and confidence within the Ethereum community regarding its potential to drive mass adoption and propel Web3 applications into real-world use cases.

Sandy Peng, Co-founder of Scroll, expressed the team’s dedication to empowering developers to create blockchain applications that bridge the gap between Web3 technology and real-world applications. Scroll’s zkEVM protocol’s launch signifies a significant step forward in the ongoing effort to scale Ethereum and usher in a new era of decentralized innovation.
